Enjoying Heart Healthy Foods: Flavorful, Too!

Enjoying Heart Healthy Foods: Flavorful, Too!

Heart healthy foods provide vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients—including magnesium, potassium, allicin, antioxidants, and nitrates—needed to optimize cardiovascular health. What’s often not mentioned—these include plenty of foods rich in flavor!

We thought we'd share just a few deliciously heart healthy foods to consider incorporating into your daily diet.

Microgreens

Microgreens can fool people. Don’t let that happen to you! Although, as the name suggests, they’re micro in size, they’re powerful sources of nutrition—often more so than full-grown counterparts. You can enjoy them throughout the day, too, on breakfast foods, in salads, and even as bite-sized snacks.

As just one example, bull’s blood microgreens help the body to lower inflammation and oxidative stress. How? Through their betanin, polyphenols, and vitamin C. If you’d like to enhance your heart healthy diet with microgreens, our Heart Healthy Signature Blend contains watercress, broccoli, bull’s blood, and radish greens.

Fresh Greens

Farm-fresh greens are delicious and quite nutritious. They contain nitrates, which support healthy blood vessel function and blood flow (and here’s our High Nitrate Fresh Greens Box). Greens from cruciferous vegetables, specifically, contain sulforaphane, a sulfur rich compound that can provide plenty of health benefits. To enjoy them, use watercress, broccoli, kale, and radish greens in your family’s meals.

Spinach

Popeye knew exactly what he was talking about! This vegetable is a wonderful source of magnesium, which is necessary for muscle and nerve function, as well as healthy blood pressure, energy production, and blood sugar balance.

Garlic

Garlic is incredibly versatile, flavoring all sorts of dishes. Seriously! Check out all these recipes that include garlic. As a healthful bonus, its allicin (activated when you cut or crush garlic or expose it to water) may modestly reduce cholesterol and blood pressure. This makes garlic another ingredient in a healthy diet.

Jerusalem Artichoke

This unique vegetable is a member of the sunflower family, a tuber that’s ideal when you want to replace potatoes with a lower carbohydrate option. Jerusalem artichokes provide that benefit while also supporting healthy blood sugar levels along with insulin that assists in health intestinal bacteria—which may play a role in a healthier cardiovascular system.

Blended Black Tea

Our specially blended Flowerhouse Black Tea Malvaceae Tea contains a mixture of deliciously drinkable health healthy ingredients to provide antioxidants (including polyphenols and flavornoids) via Rare Tea Cellar’s Organic Regal Earl Gray blend.

Plus, this marvelous tea also contains hibiscus and cocoa nibs that are antioxidant-rich with heart healthy benefits, supporting optimal blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Also included: beets that provide antioxidants plus vitamin C and betanin.
